German East Africa

German East Africa Flag & Coat

German East Africa was a German colony which included what are now Burundi, Rwanda and part of Tanzania.  At the end of World War I,  the northwest area was given to Belgium as Ruanda-Urundi, the Kionga Triangle, south of the Rovuma River was given to Portugal to become part of Mocambique and the remainder was given to Britain which it named Tanganyika.

The first stamps of German East Africa were issued in 1893 on regular German stamps with the inscription “Deutsch-Ostafrika”.  Both Belgium and Great Britain issued their own provisional stamps when they occupied the territory.  The Belgians overprinted stamps of Belgian Congo with “Ruanda” and “Urundi” in 1916.  These stamps were never used.  Then they overprinted stamps in two languages,  “Est Africain Allemand/Occupation Belge” or “Duitsch Oost Afrika/Belgische Bezetting”. When civilian post offices were opened in 1917, stamps of Uganda and East Africa were issued overprinted “G.E.A.”
