The states of India were divided into two categories, the convention states and the feudatory states. Indore was regarded as a feudatory state. They ran their own mail service and the stamps were only valid within the borders of the state. Indore issued its own stamps from 1886-1941. Many of the stamps of these states were printed using very primitive methods, so the stamps are sometimes very rare. Because of this very basic printing and design style, the stamps of the feudatory states are often referred to as “Uglies”.
