The Republic of Iraq is an oil-rich country situated in the central Middle East. Since independence from Great Britain and the declaration of the Republic in 1958, it has experienced considerable political unrest. It has the Persian Gulf to the south east, and land borders with Saudi Arabia to the southwest, Jordan and Syria to the west, Turkey to the north, Iran and Kuwait to the east. Its capital is Baghdad.
Iraq’s postal service began in 1923. King Ghazi and then King Faisal II were prominent subjects on the stamps.
