The Lao People’s Democratic Republic is a landlocked country bordered by Myanmar (Burma) and China in the northwest, Vietnam in the east, Cambodia in the south west and Thailand in the west and southwest. Its capital is Vientiane. It was a French Protectorate from 1893, but became independent in 1953. It has one of the fastest growing economies in Asia, but remains one of the most corrupt countries in the world.
Laos issued its first stamps in 1951. Before then stamps of French Indo-China were used.
