The Republic of Liberia is situated on the west coast of Africa bordering on the Atlantic Ocean. It has land borders with Sierra Leone and Guinea in the north, and Ivory Coast to the east. Its capital is Monrovia. Liberia is Africa’s first and oldest modern Republic, the republic having been proclaimed in 1848. Since the last century, it has been torn by Civil War. Today more than 85% of the population live below the international poverty line.
The first stamps were issued in 1860. From 1891 until 1909 Henry Hayman an Englishman, designed and produced the Liberian stamps. He was a philatelist himself and his designs are well regarded. Due to the primitive local printing facilities, from 1910 until 1924, the stamps were printed in Germany. The American Firestone company became involved in Liberia when it purchased rubber plantations, and as a result, the Liberian stamps were then printed in the US.
