The Republic of Madagascar (known as the Malagasy Republic since 1958) is a large island country in the Indian Ocean, just off the coast of Mozambique. Its capital is Antananarivo. Over 90% of the wildlife found on the island is found nowhere else on earth. The country was part of the French Colonial Empire from 1897, until independence in 1960. Madagascar belongs to the group of least developed countries according to the United Nations. However, as in the case of many other underdeveloped countries, the wealth is in the hands of a few, while the rest of the population lives in abject poverty.
As part of the French Colonial Empire, the stamps issued initially were general issues for the French Colonies. The first stamps of the republic were issued in 1958.
