The Malagasy Republic was established as an autonomous republic within the French Community in 1958. It existed until 1975 when it became the Democratic Republic of Madagascar. It is a very large island situated in the Indian Ocean east of Mozambique. Its capital is Tananarive.
The first stamps were issued in 1958 and even after the change of name to the Democratic Republic of Madagascar, the stamps continued to be inscribed Republic of Malagasy.
