Montenegro is a small country situated on the Adriatic Sea. In the 19th century Montenegro was part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1878 it became independent and in 1910 became a kingdom. After World War I it became part of Yugoslavia. From 1941-1943 it was occupied by Italy and thereafter by Germany until 1944.
The first stamps of Montenegro were issued in 1874 with the bust of Prince Nicholas. Changes in currency in 1902 and again in 1907 produced new stamps with new designs of the bust of Prince Nicholas. In 1910, the 50th year of his reign, Prince Nicholas became King of Montenegro and new stamps were again issued. From 1913 to 1941, no stamps were issued as Montenegro was first part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, and then part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. During the 2nd World War stamps of Italy, Yugoslavia and Germany were used at various times with overprints.
After the breakup of Yugoslavia, Serbia and Montenegro proclaimed a federation. In 2006, Montenegro declared its independence from Serbia and again begun issuing its own stamps.
