
The Colony of Natal, situated on the east coast of South Africa, was a British Colony from 1843 -1910 when it was incorporated into the Union of South Africa. Its capital was Pietermaritzburg.
The first stamps were issued in 1857, they were embossed with various designs. From 1869-1895, stamps of 1859-1867 were overprinted ‘POSTAGE” or additionally surcharged “Half-Penny”. From 1859 Queen Victoria’s portrait appeared on the stamps, and between 1902 and 1909, King Edward VII’s portrait appeared on the stamps.
