New Caledonia is a group of islands in the south Pacific to the east of northern Queensland in Australia. The islands are a French overseas territory largely self-governed. France agreed to a referendum on full independence to be held in 2018 at the latest. Since 2018, various referendums have since been held, the result being that New Caledonia is not fully independent but still a French Overseas Territory. The largest island is Grande Terre and the capital Noumea.
The first stamps of New Caledonia were issued in 1860 showing a portrait of Napoleon III. From 1862 – 1881 stamps of the French colonies were used. In 1881, the stamps of the French colonies were overprinted “NCE”. Stamps of New Caledonia were also used in the New Hebrides until 1908 and in Wallis and Futuna until 1920. Stamps issued by the Vichy regime in France in 1941 were never used, so only mint copies of these stamps are available. Thereafter stamps were issued in the name of the free French with the overprint “France Libre”. Since 1941, stamps have been issued in the name of New Caledonia.
