Newfoundland-Labrador is the most easterly province of Canada. This province became the 10th province to enter the Canadian Confederation in 1949 as Newfoundland. The name was changed to Newfoundland-Labrador in 2001 by means of an amendment to Canada’s constitution. Newfoundland refers to the island and Labrador to the mainland part of Canada in close proximity. There are also 7000 tiny islands which form part of the province. St. John’s is the capital city.
Newfoundland issued its first stamps in 1857. When it joined the Canadian Confederation in 1949, the province stopped issuing its own stamps, and started using stamps already in use in the rest of Canada.
