The Republic of Niger lies landlocked in West Africa.  It is linked to the sea by the River Niger.  Since 1973, the country has suffered civil unrest and major droughts.  It has land borders with Libya in the northeast, Chad in the east, Nigeria and Benin in the south, Burkina Faso and Mali in the west and Algeria in the northwest.  Its capital is Niamey.  More the 80% of the country is covered by the Sahara Desert.  It is an extremely poor country.  In 2014 it was ranked last in the United Nations Human Development Index.

Since 1958 when Niger became a republic, the stamps have been marked Republique du Niger.
