The Oceanic Settlements is the name originally given to French Polynesia.
It consists of about 130 islands and atolls in the South Pacific Ocean. An atoll is an island that has sunk beneath the sea and in many cases, forms reefs. Tahiti is the largest island and is the island where the capital, Papeāete, is located. By the end of the 19th Century all these islands came under French administration. They officially became a French overseas territory in 1957 and the islands were renamed French Polynesia.
From 1862, the Oceanic settlements used the general stamps of the French colonies.
