The Republic of Panama is situated in Central America. It is bordered by Costa Rica in the west and Colombia in the south east. It has sea borders with the Pacific Ocean in the south and the Caribbean in the north. Its capital is Panama City where half of the country’s 4 million people live.
The Panama Canal was constructed between 1903 and 1914 with the assistance of the United States. In 1977 an agreement was signed where the United States agreed to hand the Panama Canal back to Panama by the end of 1999. Despite social, political and economic problems during the latter half of the 20th century, the country has a very competitive economy with low unemployment.
The first stamps used in 1859 were from Colombia which was a “department” of Panama. In 1905 special commemorative stamps were issued to celebrate independence.

According to the Stanley Gibbons Catalogue I am using, the following stamps were either issued in excess of postal needs, or they have not been available to the public in reasonable quantities at face value. I think they could be referred to as Cinderella stamps.
