Papua New Guinea occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea. It also consists of a number of islands to the north and west of the country. Its capital Port Moresby is situated on the main island. During World War I the country fell under Australian rule. This continued for about 60 years. In 1975 the country became an independent Commonwealth realm.
The country is one of the least explored countries in the world. Only 18% of the population live in urban areas. The rest live in the rural areas of the country. 852 languages are spoken – this is probably due to the fact that the people live in communities with a self sustainable lifestyle, so that they have very little contact with other communities.
At the end of the 19th century, the north of the country was under German rule and the south of the country under Australia which still fell under Great Britain.
After 1914, stamps from both Germany and Australia were used with over-prints. Australian stamps were used from 1945 to 1952. Thereafter the first set of stamps of the united territory of Papua and New Guinea was issued. After 1972, the country name on the stamps changed to Papua New Guinea.
