Penrhyn Island is an island in the northern group of the Cook Islands in the south Pacific Ocean. Penrhyn was officially annexed for Great Britain in 1888 and (as part of the Cook Islands) was a British Protectorate until 1900, then was annexed to New Zealand until the Cook Islands became independent in 1965.
The first stamps used in Penrhyn were stamps of the Cook Islands. From May 1902 overprinted stamps of New Zealand were used, with a new face value in the native language. Today the stamps of the Cook Islands are valid on Penrhyn, while the issues of Penrhyn are valid only on the island itself.
