The Republic of Peru is situated on the west coast of South America. It is bordered by Ecuador and Colombia in the north, Brazil and Bolivia in the east, Argentina in the south east, Chile in the south and it has a sea border in the west with the Pacific Ocean. Its capital is Lima which is situated on the coast, but also in the mountains, the Andes range covering the whole country from north to south.
In the 16th century Peru was conquered by Spain but gained independence in 1924. Although the country endured severe political, economic and social unrest during most of the 20th Century, today it has one of South America’s most prosperous economies and has a high standard of living. The main language is Spanish, although Quechua and Aymara are regarded as official languages as well.
The country began using lithographed stamps in 1857 which were initially provided by the Pacific Steam Navigation Company which had initiated postal services between Britain, Chile and Peru. The stamps were never actually used, but when the Peruvian government decided to experiment with postal services, it used these stamps, but only for a period of 3 months. Today most copies of these stamps are forgeries. The first real stamps were issued in 1858 with the Peruvian coat of arms but not the name of the country. The first stamps with “Peru” printed on the stamp were only issued in 1866.
A Peruvian stamp issued in 1871 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the first railway between Lima and Callao is regarded as the first commemorative stamp issued worldwide.
