The Republic of the Philippines is an island country situated in the western Pacific Ocean to the north east of the island of Borneo. There are about 7500 islands. The capital is Manila. After 21 years of dictatorship, democracy was restored in 1986. The country is very prone to earthquakes and typhoons.
The first stamps of the Philippines were issued in 1854. Because of the country’s links to Spain, the first stamps showed a profile of Spanish Queen Isabella II. The Philippines have a most interesting stamp issued in 1932. It shows the Pagsanjan Falls in the Philippines, but an American reporter noticed the similarity to falls in America and it was subsequently confirmed that the falls were in fact the Vernal Falls in California. When the “Commonwealth” Government was inaugurated in 1935, all stamps were overprinted “COMMONWEALTH”. After more than a century of involvement by various countries, after democracy was restored in 1986, the postal services were taken over by the Philippine government.
