The Pitcairn Islands consist of 4 volcanic islands in the south Pacific Ocean. Their nearest neighbour is French Polynesia. Only one island, Pitcairn is inhabited. The territory is the last British Overseas Territory in the South Pacific. There are only about 50 people living permanently on the island.
The first regular postal services were established in 1921. Hand stamps read “Posted at Pitcairn Island – no stamps available”. The first stamps of the islands appeared in 1940.
