Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States. By law Puerto Ricans are citizens of the United States and may move freely between the island and the United States. The country consists of the main island of Puerto Rico and a number of smaller ones. The islands are situated between the Dominican Republic and the Virgin Islands. The capital is San Juan.
The first stamps were issued in 1856 years ago when Cuba and Puerto Rico put out a joint issue. The last specifically Puerto Rican stamps were issued in 1900. They were superseded by United States stamps which are still used on the island today as Puerto Rico is a territory serviced by the United States Postal Service.
