The Island of St Helena is situated in the south Atlantic Ocean about 2000 km west of southern Angola. It is a British Overseas Territory, named after St. Helena of Constantinople. Until 1502 it was uninhabited. Napoleon was imprisoned on the island by the British and he died there. It was also used to imprison about 6000 boer soldiers between 1900 and 1901. At this time the population of the island reached an all time high of 9850. In 1922 the island of Ascension was made a dependency and in 1938 the island of Tristan da Cunha also became a dependency of St. Helena. Under a new constitution in 2009, this territory was renamed “St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha”.
The first stamp of St Helena had a portrait of Queen Victoria and was issued in 1856. The main theme of the stamps until the second half of the 20th century is British Monarchs, sometimes with scenery of the island.
