St Lucia is an island country in the Caribbean to the north of Barbados. During the 19th century, rule of St. Lucia see-sawed between Britain and France. From 1958 – 1962 the island was a member of the Federation of West Indies. In 1979 it became an independent state of the Commonwealth of Nations under the banner of the United Kingdom. Its capital is Castries. The island was named after St Lucy of Syracuse and is the only country in the world named after a woman.
St Lucia began using stamps in 1860. Supplies were sent out from the United Kingdom, but the numbers must have been very small as it is probable that at the time only about 200 people on the island could read or write.
