The Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe is an island nation situated in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Gabon. Portuguese explorers discovered the islands in the 15th century. Since 1975, the islands have been independent. The country is one of the most stable democracies in Africa.
The first stamps were issued in 1869. The designs on the stamps were similar to those of other Portuguese Colonies. Since independence, many stamps have been issued, mainly of interest to thematic collectors.
