Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is located west of Italy, south of the French island of Corsica. Like many other cities in present day Italy, it was an independent territory until unification in 1861.
The first stamps were issued in 1851. They were lithographed on unwatermarked paper and imperforate. They featured the profile of Victor Emmanuel. It seems that many Sardinian stamps were forgeries. The last issue of stamps was in 1855 – these stamps were valid until 1862 and were used in all territories that had become part of the Kingdom of Italy. Sardinian stamps are sought after by collectors all over the world.
