The Duchy of Schleswig was situated in an area of Jutland north and south of the present day border between Germany and Denmark. Since 1920, Northern Schleswig has belonged to Denmark and Southern Schleswig to Germany.
During the 19th Century there was much insecurity and Schleswig changed hands between Denmark, Germany and Austria. After a plebiscite in 1920, Schleswig was returned to Denmark and today still forms part of Denmark. Stamps were only issued inscribed SCHLESWIG during 1920.
