
The Republic of Senegal is a small country situated on the coast of west Africa. Its capital is Dakar. On the west is the Atlantic Ocean, to the north is Mauritania, to the east Mali and to the south Guinea Bissau, Gambia and Guinea. Gambia, an independent country lies in the middle of Senegal along the banks of the Gambia River. Senegal became independent from France in 1960.
The first stamps of Senegal were issued in 1887. From 1944, stamps from French West Africa were used. This was the case for all French possessions in French West Africa. The last stamps of French West Africa were inscribed “Abidjan-Dakar. From 1959, stamps of Mali were used, and after independence in 1960, Senegal issued its own stamps once again.
