Serbia

Serbia Flag and Coat

Present day Serbia is a Republic situated to the north-west of what was Yugoslavia.  The Serbia referred to on this page was a Principality until 1881 and then became a Kingdom.

It began issuing its own stamps in 1866.  This was only until 1918 when the territory became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.  From 1941 – 1944 under German occupation, the country again issued its own stamps.  Thereafter it became part of Yugoslavia.  When Yugoslavia broke up in the 1990’s, Serbia formed a partnership with Montenegro which was peacefully dissolved in 2006.  For the first time since 1918, Serbia became a sovereign state.
