The Republic of Sierra Leone is situated in west Africa. The Atlantic Coast is its western border, Guinea is to the north and east and Liberia to the southeast. Its capital is Freetown. It gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1961. Today it is one of the poorest nations in the world.
The first stamps of Sierra Leone were issued in 1859. The 4d blue of this first series as well as the £1 purple on red stamp from the 1896 series have a high value in the Stanley Gibbons Catalogue. After independence, the first stamps had the country’s coat of arms instead of Queen Elizabeth II.
In 1964 Sierra Leone became the first country to produce self-adhesive stamps. The reason for this was to avoid the tendency of water activated stamps sticking together.
