The Federal Republic of Somalia is situated in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Ethiopia to the west, Djibouti to the northwest and Kenya to the south. The Indian Ocean forms its east coast and the Gulf of Aden its north coast. In 1960 British and Italian Somaliland were united to create this semi-arid state which has suffered years of civil war. Its capital is Mogadishu.
The first stamps of the new Somali Republic were issued in 1960. During the civil war the national postal infrastructure was totally destroyed. This meant that residents could only communicate via letters sent via acquaintances, but also via the internet. During the war stamps were produced outside the country, mainly designed for foreign collectors. Postal services were only resumed officially at the end of 2013.
