
Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic is situated in western Asia. It has borders with Israel and Lebanon in the south west, Jordan in the south, Iraq in the east, Turkey in the north and it has a sea border to the west with the Mediterranean Sea. Its capital is Damascus. Syria fell under the Ottoman Empire until Turkey’s defeat in the 1st World War. Thereafter the country fell under French rule and became independent in 1946.
Until 1919, stamps of Turkey were used. From 1919 – 1923 stamps of France were used with various overprints. Thereafter Syria issued its own stamps.
