Before 1918, Tanganyika was the German colony of German East Africa. It was under British mandate from the end of World War I until 1946, then administered by Great Britain until independence within the British Commonwealth in 1961. From 1961 until 1964 it was a republic within the realm of the Commonwealth. In 1964 Tanganyika joined the People’s Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar and in 1965 changed its name to Tanzania.
From 1935 until 1961, Tanganyika had a common postal service with Kenya and Uganda.
