Tasmania is an island situated south of the state of Victoria in Australia. Today it forms part of Australia. In 1803, it was settled by the British. The second British settlement in 1804 is today known as Hobart, the capital of the state. After British involvement for most of the 19th century, Tasmania became part of Australia in 1901.
Tasmania and the other Australian states operated their own postal service and issued their own stamps. The first stamps inscribed Tasmania were issued in 1858. Until 1896, all postage stamps had a portrait of Queen Victoria. Tasmania’s last issue was in 1913.
