Trinidad is an island in the Caribbean forming part of what we know today as the West Indies. After invading Trinidad in 1797, Trinidad became part of Britain in 1802. In 1889, it was formally ceded to Great Britain and in 1899 it was united with Tobago to form the colony of Trinidad and Tobago.
The first stamps were issued in 1847. They were known as the Lady McLeod issue after the steamer that provided the service between Port of Spain and the Port of San Fernando. The first general issue is of the “Britannia” type and was issued in 1851. This design was used almost exclusively until 1922. Others stamps showed the portrait of Queen Victoria in different designs.
