The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is situated in south-east Asia. It is bordered by China to the north, Laos in the northwest and Cambodia in the southwest. It has coastal borders with the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea. Since 1976 when North and South Vietnam unified, Hanoi has been the capital.
Initially stamps were issued by the French colonial administration. During the years of conflict between North and South Vietnam, each issued its own stamps. Since 1976, a unified postal service was established which has issued stamps for the country as a whole since then.
