Labuan Island and 6 smaller islands are located off the coast of the state of Sabah in east Malaysia, at the northern tip of the island of Borneo. The capital is Victoria. The islands were ceded to Great Britain in 1846 and became a Crown Colony from 1902. They were incorporated into the Straits Settlements in 1906 and today are part of Malaysia.
From 1867, the stamps of the Straits Settlements were used, but the islands issued their own stamps from 1879. The first stamps had the profile of Queen Victoria, but are unusual for being inscribed in Malay-Arabic (Jawi) and Chinese in addition to ‘LABUAN POSTAGE”. The last Labuan stamp came out in 1902 inscribed ‘LABUAN COLONY” and depicting a crown. After incorporation into the Straits Settlements, Labuan stopped issuing its own stamps, although they were valid for some time thereafter.
