Ruanda-Urundi

Ruanda Urundi Flag & Coat

Ruanda-Urundi was a territory forming part of German East Africa.  It was occupied by German Forces during the 1st World War and was administered by Belgium until 1962.  The area then became two separate independent states, named Rwanda and Burundi.

The first stamps in 1902 were those of German East Africa.  From 1916, stamps of the Belgian Congo with various overprints were used.  From 1931 until 1962 the stamps were inscribed “Ruanda-Urundi”.  After 1962 stamps Rwanda and Urundi issued their own stamps.
