Tripolitania

Tripolitania-Flag-Coat

Tripolitania was a province of Libya, with Tripoli as its main centre.  It fell under the Ottoman Empire, but in 1911 was captured by Italy.  From 1927 to 1934, it was a separate Italian colony, but thereafter became part of Libya.

Whilst a colony of Italy, all stamps were printed at the  Italian Government Printing Works.  The first stamps issued in 1923 were Italian stamps overprinted “Tripolitania”.  As stamps from this territory  were not issued for too many years, stamped copies are valued at almost double the value of unstamped copies.  However, it appears that there are many fakes in circulation.
