The Republic of Costa Rica is situated in Central America. Its land borders are Panama to the south and Nicaragua to the north. The Pacific Ocean is on the west and the Caribbean on the east. Its capital is San Jose. It is one of the most stable and progressive nations in Latin America. Since 1949 it has had no army and is one of the few countries in the world in this position.
The first stamps of Costa Rica appeared in 1863. There were several currency changes over the years which resulted in stamp issues with surcharges in the new currencies, i.e. reales in the beginning, pesos and centavos from 1883 and since 1900 the new colon currency.
