The State of Qatar occupies a peninsula situated on the Persian Gulf. Doha is the capital. The country’s only land border is with Saudi Arabia. Qatar was a British Protectorate from the beginning of the 20th century until gaining independence in 1971. The country has the highest per capita income in the world, probably due to its natural gas and oil reserves which are the third largest in the world today.
It was only in 1961 that the first stamps inscribed Qatar, were issued. From 1966, the currency on stamps was changed from Indian rupees to dirhams and riyals.
