The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two thirds of the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. The western third is occupied by Haiti. It is one of two Caribbean islands shared by two countries, the other being Saint Martin shared by France and the Netherlands (Sint Maarten). The capital of the Dominican Republic is Santo Domingo – a third of the population lives in this city. The country is the most visited destination in the Caribbean. It has very good economic growth which is driven by tourism, construction and manufacturing.
The country gained independence from Spain in 1865 and has produced its own stamps since then. They are inscribed Republica Dominicana.
