Jind

India-Flag

Today Jind is one of the largest and oldest cities in northern India.  It existed as a “convention” state of the Punjab until 1948, when it became part of India.  “Convention” states were distinct from the “feudatory” states which had no postal agreement with British India.

Stamps were issued in the name of Jind from 1874, but since 1885, British stamps were used which were overprinted JIND STATE.  The spelling of the overprint varied from JIND to JHIND or JEEND.
