The Ryukyu Islands are a chain of islands situated in the East China Sea north of Taiwan and southwest of Kyushu Island in Japan. The largest island is Okinawa. The islands were occupied by US forces in 1945. After a period of military rule, they became semi-autonomous under US administration, but some of the islands were returned to Japan in 1953 and the remaining islands were returned to Japan in 1972. Today the islands use Japanese stamps.
