Benin

Benin-Flag-Coat

Benin is a country in West Africa, formerly known as Dahomey (1960-1975).  It is bordered by Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east, Burkina Faso to the northwest and Niger to the northeast.  The capital is Porto-Novo, but the largest city and economic capital is Cotonou.

The first stamps of Benin were French colonial stamps used at Porto Novo in 1888.  After much political instability and changes of name from Benin to Dahomey on several occasions, the country was again renamed Benin in 1975.  Since then, there have been regular issues of stamps which were initially inscribed REPUBLIQUE POPULAIRE DU BENIN and since 1990 REPUBLIQUE DU BENIN.
