New Hebrides

New-Hebrides-Flag

The New Hebrides Condominium is the name given to the island group in the south Pacific Ocean. Since independence in 1980 the islands have been known as the Republic of Vanuatu.  The islands were colonised by both the British and the French in the 18th century.  As a result the islands were divided into two communities, one Anglophone and one Francophone.  Even after independence in 1980, this division still remained.

The first stamps of the Condominium were issued in 1908.  Different stamps were issued for the English community and the French community.
