French India consisted of a group of 5 settlements in India. The inhabitants voted to join India in 1954. These included Pondichery, Karikal and Yanaon on the Coromandel Coast, Mahe on the Malabar Coast and Chandernagor in Bengal.
The first stamps from French India date from 1892. These stamps were only used for mail to France and French possessions. From 1954, stamps of India were used.
