Bangladesh

The People’s Republic of Bangladesh is a country situated in Asia.  It lies at the north of the Bay of Bengal.  It has land borders with India and Myanmar (Burma).  In 1971 it seceded from Pakistan and after much political instability, returned to democracy in 1991.  The capital is Dhaka.  It is one of the largest textile exporters in the world today.

Bangladesh issued its own postage stamps on gaining independence in 1971.  The first series showed the leader of the struggle for independence, Shaikh Mujibur Rahman.  A great number of stamps have been produced in the last 30 years, most emphasising the distinctive cultural heritage of the country.
