Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory situated in the Caribbean just north of Guadeloupe. In 1995, the capital city of Plymouth was destroyed by a volcano. More than two thirds of the population fled, mainly to Great Britain. By 2016, the population had risen from 1200 after the eruption to about 5000 people. Volcanic activity has continued, the city of Plymouth remains unpopulated and there is an exclusion zone keeping visitors away from the danger zone.
In 1876 the first stamps were issued. They were stamps of Antigua overprinted MONTSERRAT.
