Guinea-Flag-and-Coat

Guinea is a small country on the west coast of Africa.  To the north it is bordered by Guinea-Bissau, Senegal and Mali, Ivory Coast to the south east, Liberia to the south and Sierra Leone and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Its capital is Conakry.

The country achieved independence from France in 1958, but since then there has been severe conflict.  Muslims represent 90% of the population.  The main language is French.

From 1892, stamps were issued as “Guinee Francaise”, from 1913 as “Afrique Occidentale Francaise“ and from 1938 as “Guinee”, “Guinee Francaise” and “Afrique Occidentale Francaise”.  From 1944 until independence in 1958, stamps were issued as “Afrique Occidentale Francaise”.  Since then the Republic of Guinea issued its own stamps in the name of the republic.
