How Does Our Project Work?

Although we realised that showcasing our stamp collection via the internet would be a big job, we never really appreciated just how involved it is and will become more so, as the website grows.  So, after much discussion, each of us has undertaken to perform a specific function, which does not mean that we will not help with other aspects of the project.

My job is to sort the stamps and scan them on to the computer.  This sounds very simple, but I had to learn how to do this properly.  Trained my old brain.  It is very easy to get sidetracked, so while I am sorting, I get so excited when I see different stamps and two hours later I have not scanned my allotted number of stamps for the day.  Before scanning I need to find the date of the stamp.  Often this is very difficult, as the Stanley Gibbons catalogue does not show images of all the stamps, it often only lists the value and description of the stamp, so this can be pretty time consuming.  I often need an extra set of eyes to pinpoint the date of the stamp,

mom-at-work1My job is to write the articles.  I am constantly thinking of titles for articles and have made a list of what I want to write about, so that I don’t forget (remember I am a granny and granny’s are inclined to forget).  This involves a lot of research when I am writing factual articles.  As mentioned by Carl, we are total amateurs at stamp collecting, so we are learning every day.  I don’t want to overload visitors to our site with facts, but as many will be amateurs as well, I’d like to share our new found knowledge with you all.

My other job is teaming up with Willy before he has scanned an album.  I enter the stamps on a spreadsheet in date order and with all the necessary information, e.g. Year, Catalogue Ref. No., Value of stamps, and of course how many we have.

In the eyes of my Mom and Dad, I am the computer fundi.  I like to think that I am, but I am also learning every day, not only about stamps, developing our website, postings,  but also new trends on the internet, how to make our project exciting to the visitors to our site and all the technical in’s and out’s that go with this project of ours. I upload the images of the stamps onto the website and post articles and blogs.  I have also added some blogs so that visitors to our site can see the project from a different angle.

  1. I collect stamps since I was a small boy, and even I am not putting a lot of time and work on it right now, I believe I will come back to it any time in the future. Collecting stamps is a great hoby and it allows you to learn a lot of things about other countries you have never visited and different subjects you have never learned of.
Building a website to show your collection iss agreat idea and I believe it will probably lead to more similar webs.
