The Principality of Andorra is a tiny landlocked state situated in the Pyrenees Mountains and bordered by Spain and France. Both French and Spanish are spoken as well as Catalan and Portuguese. Why is it called a principality? This is because it is a monarchy headed by two co-Princes – the Roman Catholic Bishop of Urgell in Spain and the President of France. The capital is Andorra la Vella which is the highest capital in Europe situated 1023 m above sea level. One of its main sources of income is from tourism.
Until 1931, Andorra used French stamps. The first set of Andorran stamps was inscribed “Vallees d’Andorre”. Since the 1960’s and 1970’s Andorra has started issuing colourful commemorative stamps illustrating Andorra’s heritage. Some of the early issue stamps from Andorra are very costly.
